A New Lens on Behaviour 3:4
1. Why This Lens Matters
Understanding the nervous system (regulation, connection, felt safety) plus trauma/toxic stress reframes behaviours that seem mismatched to their trigger
Address the real underlying problem, not just the visible behaviour
-
Framed as putting on "x-ray vision goggles" to see into the brain, heart, and nervous system behind behaviour
2. Behaviour as a Clue, Not the Whole Story
-
General patterns (facilitator customizes to audience) across the watchdog pathway:
What's Up (owl still nearby, orienting) → mild protective behaviours
Ready for Action (owl has left) → heightened protection response
Back Off (barking/growling/fleeing) → seeking safety before attack
Attack (terror level) → full survival response
-
General patterns across the possum pathway:
La-La Land (owl still nearby) → starting to check out
Trickster (owl gone) → fawn-like compliance to stay safe — easy to miss, but risky and painful
Shut Down → visible dissociation, feels "no way out"
Play Dead (terror level) → last-resort survival collapse
Note: a nervous system may skip straight to the dissociation continuum if that path has been more heavily reinforced by past experiences
3. Applying the Lens to All Behaviours and Diagnoses
Any behavior/diagnosis can be viewed through stress response, regulation, connection, and felt-safety
Facilitator prompt: turn this into a group discussion, applying the lens collaboratively to real behaviors
Validates parents' sense that responses seem outsized — reframes as "sensitized stress response system matching the child's internal experience," not manipulation or overreaction
-
Sets up coming modules: how to relieve the watchdog/possum's workload and grow the owl brain
4. Roots of Sensitization
(content overlaps with Lesson 3)
Trauma/toxic stress and insufficient co-regulation impair developing regulation
Attachment-based trauma tying connection to danger; the "go toward/go away" bind
Sensitization mechanics: need for predictable/moderate/consistent stress exposure, temperament and neuro-type mismatches (eye contact example again), the "stuck on/stuck off" accelerator visual
Outcome: overactive watchdog, scared possum, terror-level reactions to mild stress
-
Reframe toward gratitude for the watchdog/possum's hard work
